Huge Koa Logs brought down in a traditional manner from the high
elevation Kalepa Koa forest by members of the Kihei and Hana Canoe Clubs.
The canoes being carved from these logs, under the guidance of master carver
Fafa from Tahiti, will help teach Maui's youth for generations to come. The
last time canoe logs were harvested from this forest was in 1937. It took
teams of young men and women several weeks of constant hauling through dense
forest, with ropes and pulleys, to bring the logs down, and the canoe
project is part of a koa reforestation project.
Many wonderful meals are prepared by Helen in this farm kitchen
